Pop Quiz: What app claims to have eclipsed Twitter's 200 million monthly active users? It's the FREE SMS chat application called WhatsApp. Why haven't you heard about this? Answer: Because it's big in Brazil, India, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Italy.
In America, most cell plans offer an "unlimited text" option, which you get if you are 13 or have a teenager in your house. You pay $30 a month to get the piece of mind that your teen isn't going to text you into debtors prison with their all-night and day text messaging. But what if you could text 365 FOR FREE?
That's where WhatsApp comes in. It's 99¢ for iOS users to install it and a 99¢ annual charge for users of other platforms, with the first year free. The app uses the push notification that comes with your phones monthly data plan - cutting out the need for Text Messaging. Ah, ha!
According to their site, "In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages."
What I like about this service is that you can use ONE messaging app over ALL devices. So Apple's and Android's can communicated… oh, and those of us still stuck with a BlackBerry can get on board too.
