As kids get ready to return to class, many parents see laptops and smartphones as important back-to-school supplies. But few plan to purchase the high-tech items for their children.
Nearly two-thirds of the adults taking part a FatWallet.com poll say laptops are "better suited" for homework than a tablet or desktop computer. But just 11% are "very likely" to buy a laptop for their child this year, and 16% are "somewhat likely" to add it to their shopping list. 12% might get one for their kid "next year."
Meanwhile, 65% of the parents feel it's "practical" for teenagers to have smartphones. But just 15% are shopping for the device for their child. In addition, 16% feel that kids who want smartphones should make that purchase with their own money.
