The city of Albany gets into the casino sweepstakes.

A Rochester developer and Capital District OTB are getting together on a plan for a $300 million attraction near Thruway Exit 23 that would include a 275 room hotel, 63,000 square foot casino, an indoor water park, and an equestrian center.

Developer David Flaum says this could mean 1,800 jobs for the area.  He promises to hire local and says he will not stage any conventions or compete with any of the city's entertainment venues.

Albany mayor Kathy Sheehan isn't giving the plan a total endorsement yet but says she is willing, for the moment, to let the process go forward.

As envisioned right now, the hotel-casino complex would be located on the site of the Noonan family compound.  That family, which includes Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and long-time Democratic insider Polly Noonan, has been politically active in the city for decades.

The state will announce details on bids for a casino license later this month and will accept applications until the end of June.
